Tim Williams is a blues-based singer / songwriter / multi - instrumentalist. He is a 40 year veteran of the 'Roots' music scene in North America, roots which stretch back to the coffee-house scene of his native California in the mid 60's.

Settling in Canada in 1970, Tim is a studio musician, producer, and a performer in constant demand. He has played Folk / Blues / Jazz festivals and concert halls and clubs from Halifax, to Vancouver Island, to the Yukon.

Inspired by the Hillbilly and Western Swing music he heard as a child, Tim absorbed late Fifties Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll, Hawaiian and Mexican music, early Sixties Folk, and Bluegrass “like a sponge” before discovering a passion for traditional blues styles which was fueled by seeing many first generation blues musicians live during the “Blues Boom” of the mid and late Sixties."

The Bill Johnson Band has been chosen by the Victoria Blues Society to represent BC in the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Together with VBS, we are excited to announce that we are fundraising to send the Bill Johnson Blues Band to Memphis! Donations to support our local Sunday night Superior Blues guitarist Bill Johnson can be left at the cafe.

The 2011 International Blues Challenge will be the 27th year of Blues musicians from around the world competing for cash, prizes, and industry recognition. The Blues Foundation will present the 27th International Blues Challenge February 2-5, 2011 in Memphis, TN. The world's largest gathering of Blues acts represents an international search by The Blues Foundation and its Affiliated Organizations for the Blues Band and Solo/Duo Blues Act ready to take their act to the international stage. In 2010, 110 bands and 80 solo/duo acts entered, filling the clubs up and down Beale Street for the semi-finals on Thursday and Friday and the finals at the Orpheum Theater on Saturday. We will have at least that many in 2011.

"I found this one as my daughter and I were walking down to Fishermans Wharf. The number of shoes on tree is absolutely amazing as it is almost totally covered. The tree itself is long dead but it's branches have been put to a new use. The patio was closed when we came by as it was early in the morning so the coordinates are for the gate. However it is only a few yards from the gate to the tree.

This tree contains all types of shoes (mainly sneakers though) and according to a local was started by a university student who tossed the first pair up as a prank. I guess it just caught on from there. Nowadays the tree is used by the cafe to support the W.I.N. (Women in Need) charity. As the sign says, make a wish, toss your shoes and donate to W.I.N." - David Mac

The staff are experienced and knowledgeable, the wine list is expertly curated, and the food focuses on local, in season ingredients. The atmosphere is unique and funky, and you will notice a cool local crowd. I tried the crab fritters and ginger cake. Victoria's Secrets (III of IV): Stuff of Superior Dreams

Just a few blocks from the well-known tourist attractions of Victoria (Empress, Royal BC Museum, Parliament Buildings, Undersea Gardens, Wax Museum, etc.) lies James Bay, the oldest residential district (north of San Francisco) on the west coast of North America. And it's here, on a damp, overcast Wednesday night, dolled up in vintage attire, that Cornichon and Hedonista found yet another treasure: The Superior. HEDONISTA says: Ever since I first tried this wonderfully whimsical place, I'm now happy to say that I'm as close to a regular as one who now lives in Seattle can be. A small plates eatery with a focus on small local food producers and BC beer and wine, The Superior supports local artists and musicians. From the peaceful patio to the always-interesting interior, The Superior - which opened in October 2005 - is all about the ambiance. In fact, the entire restaurant serves as owner Lisa Boehme's own personal canvas, which she redesigns seasonally (or whenever the mood takes her). Her goal as an artist and visionary: to challenge people to think outside of the box, to change the way one thinks and, by doing so, to make the world a better place. Much like the interior and exterior, the menu at The Superior Café is also a blank canvas; for, here, art is food and food is art. Not over the top, mind you - just good, creative-yet-simple small bites served up with an artistic eye. They do weekend brunches (10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.) and evening meals Tuesday through Sunday (5:00 p.m. 'til "late"). (They don't currently do lunches.) They do offer a "soup of the moment." And their menu changes up weekly. In the evenings they host art and cultural events, be they movies, music, or even dating games. That night - in my crushed black velvet dress, black stockings and patent leather Mary Jane-heeled shoes tied with black ribbons - we enjoyed the 1941 flick TheMaltese Falcon - complemented by their version of a Cosmopolitan, sans rose: white cranberry juice, cointreau & vodka, served up with a lime wedge. Very nice - think gin & tonic meets lemonade.... Their noshies are very pleasant - their root chips, for example, get on like a house on fire with their beer, wine, and spirits ... not to mention their film noir (think a creativelyclassy alternative to the traditional movie fare of potato chips and popcorn).

CORNICHON says: Film Noir night at a cafe just off the Inner Harbour. Film noir as in Bogie. It's been almost three-score years and ten since the great writer-director John Huston and his gang of players (Bogie, Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre) launched their concept: hard-driving, fast-talking, high-contrast urban adventures. Guns, dames, cigarettes, booze. Quick cuts interspersed with long, long takes. Actors who created dark characters; scripts that told a dark story. Thus does Cornichon find himself, of a Wednesday evening, in ascot & leather jacket, watching the iconic Maltese Falcon. Best supporting actor for Greenstreet in his first movie. Bogie misquoting Shakespeare (“The stuff dreams are made of”) as the elevator takes Mary Astor away. Lights up and The Superior's owner, Lisa Boehme, appears. We recognize her--don't we?--from Toulouse-Lautrec's sketches of Paris nightlife: a savvy dame who plays the role of a slightly loopy femme fatale. Superior's lofty space across from Fisherman's Wharf Park was built as a gathering spot for under-age, off-duty seafarers; later it became a Unitarian church. Now it's an arty restaurant, an elcectic performance venue and unofficial community center. Hundreds of shoes festoon a tree in the courtyard: a fundraiser for battered women, an expression of Lisa's open-hearted, California-girl, earth-mother personality. There's food and drink here nightly, as well as a popular weekend brunch. Organic, of course. A “culinary artist” named Torin Egan's in charge of the kitchen. But the spirit of the place comes from Lisa, self-described “visionary,” who has the creativity to keep all the wheels spinning without going off the tracks.

The Story Of Our Shoe Tree

......Began in April, and came to completion in July. The shoes were donated from W.I.N. (a charitable organization for women in need), and were all shoes that were not saleable. We kept a basket full of shoes for people to choose from, and then wishes were made, shoes were tossed, and donations were collected. Thus a community sculpture was created!

“The café is absolutely superior. The atmosphere is very tastefully done, by the owner herself, and it changes every season. Her dedication to her baby is shown as she herself makes an appearance almost every night as an extremely well dressed hostess, to help make customers feel as if they have stepped into her own home. The staff is extremely hospitible, polite and very knowledgeable.

When I went to this resteraunt it was very busy, but my waiter Andrew was 150% there for me and my family. It made us feel as if we were his only table when of course that was not the case. The food was remarkable. Flavors that you would never ever think of combining, the chef seems to match as if they were always meant to pair each other. One of my favorite dishes was the Liberace flatbread, figs, proscuitto, goat cheese and caramelized onions all atop a delicious thin crusted pizza.

For those of you who think this place is over priced, maybe you should try sampling the menu like your server suggested. Your meant to order 3 or four items between 2 people and share. This way you can sample the menu better and get a larger variety of flavors. This is what I love about this resteraunt, it encourages sharing which is something that is somewhat forgotten in our society. Not to mention you are paying for 100% local, organic food. I also love the fact that there is no rush when you are there, the servers understand that its a whole evenings entertainment. You are meant to sit and take in the atmosphere, enjoy the music, sip wine in the antique shop, order a few more plates, have great coffee, and be in bliss." - Trip Advisor

September Recipe : Sweet Pickles

2 cucumbers
2 tbsp kosher salt

brine:
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup rice wine vinegar
3/4 cup water
1 tbsp. salt
1 tsp. crushed chilli’s
fresh dill sprigs

- Slice cucumbers into thin rounds (1/4 -1/2 cm)
- Toss with salt and let sit for 1/2 hour
- Combine brine ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil
- Remove from heat
- Rinse cucumbers under cool water
- Combine with fresh dill in a nonreactive container. Pour brine overtop.
- Let cool at room temp. And then refrigerate. Will last one month in sealed container

August Recipe : PEAR VANILLA VINAIGRETTE

2 pears
1 tbsp honey
1 vanilla bean
60 ml red wine vinegar
1 tsp vanilla extract
500 ml canola oil
salt and pepper to taste

- Preheat oven to 350
- Peel, halve and core pears, and place onto oven proof pan
- Scrape out vanilla bean onto pears, coat with honey and add 1/2 cup water to pan cover with foil and roast until soft
- Once pears are cool, puree with remaining liquid
- Add salt and pepper, red wine vinegar, and vanilla extract
- Slowly drizzle in canola oil

Miranda Sage, born in England and brought up in Canada, had an early start in musical education in piano, clarinet, saxophone, and guitar. Her vocal training was acquired at the University of Victoria, Victoria Conservatory of Music, numerous jazz workshops (Canada:Victoria, Banff; U.S: Port Townsend; Ireland: Belfast), including study with Sheila Jordan, Jay Clayton, Louise Rose, and Norma Winstone. This has given her a solid base on which to build her concept of the voice as an instrument. Her credits include competitive recognition, and musical tours in Europe, the U.S., and Canada.

Thank you, Lisa and Torin!

Thank you again for helping to make our wedding day so special. We had a wonderful time. Our guests loved the venue, raved about the food and said the staff was great. They loved seeing you all behind the bar doing YMCA! We had two picky eaters who we were a bit worried about but they both loved the food. We also had several people say how much they enjoyed your dad's gallery - an extra special treat we didn't expect. We are starting to get photos from the guests - many show people enjoying the food! My cousin's son said it was the best day of his life as he got to run around the garden with the other kids all night. We had such a good time. I just can't tell you how much we enjoyed it. We wake up in the middle of the night and say, "Remember .... Remember ....". We knew The Superior would be a great wedding venue but it exceeded all our expections. Thanks again. Please thank all your staff for us. See you soon.
